How to order Coffee and Cappuccino like a true Italian!

Surprise your travel companions with your knowledge of Italy’s best-known ritual: ordering and drinking coffee! Here are some examples of the most usual types of coffee and some tips on how to order like a true Italian!

Caffè espresso: (kah-FE) is ordered simply by asking for “un caffè” (an “espresso” is a fast train!). It has a rather strong flavour and is covered with a thin caramel cream-coloured layer. Any occasion is suitable for drinking an “espresso”, even in the evening, if you want to stay awake!

Cappuccino: (pronounced kah-pu-CHEE-no) famous throughout the world for its white milky foam above a layer of coffee, in Italy it is only drunk at breakfast. After a meal, Italians drink a simple coffee or “caffè corretto” (kah-FE ko-RE-to, with the addition of grappa or sambuca). If you see a group of people drinking cappuccino at 3 o’clock in the afternoon… you have probably found a group of tourists!

Caffè Hag: decaffeinated coffee. This takes its name from the most wellknown producer of decaffeinated coffee in Italy.

If you are still curious about the thousands of ways to drink coffee, try a “caffè macchiato” (kah-FE mahk-YAH-to, like a cappuccino, but in a small cup), “caffè con panna” (with cream), “caffè freddo” or “caffè shakerato” (kah-FE shake-er-Ah-to) (iced espresso coffee). And if you are worried that the strong Italian coffee will set your heart racing, order an “americano” (espresso with added hot water), to the dismay of the barman!
